07/17/15

Our end in mind today is to learn about our brains.

We are going to start studying the human body, so the brain is a very good way to start.  In this post, you will find several activities that you need to be working in during today's period.

1) Make a word document.  At the end of the period you will have to send it to my mail, write your name as the name of the document.

2) Make a list of all the things your brain is doing right now (they can be voluntary or involuntary activities).  Write at least 10 of them.

3) Check out this game!  The cerebrum is the biggest part of the brain and it has two hemispheres.  The right hemisphere controls the left side, and the right controls the left one.  Each hemisphere is made up of four lobes.  In this game, you are going to be using specially the OCCIPITAL LOBE, which process what we see…

4) Now, it’s time to learn about the brain.  Check out this page.

5) The brain is made up of five main parts.  Investigate about them; then, in the word document, match the parts with the definitions given below.

The brainstem
The cerebellum
The cerebrum (which is made up of four lobes: frontal lobe, pariental lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe)
The thalamus
The hypothalamus

It receives information from many different part of the brain.  It sorts and filters this information and then passes it on to the cerebrum.

It is the biggest part of the brain.  It collects information form the senses and controls all the conscious, voluntary activities of the body.

It controls many of the body’s basic, involuntary activities, such as heartbeat, respiration, blinking, and digestion.  It also wakes us up in the morning.

It is responsible for emotions.  It also controls bodily drive such as hunger, thirst, and sex drive.  It performs some if this activities using hormones.

It controls the balance, posture, coordination, and fine movements.  It also controls all the motions we perform “without thinking”.  Like riding a bike (after you have already learned it, and practiced it).

Do the same thing with the lobes.

LOBES
Deal with sound.  Help us understand spoken language.
Deal with reasoning, voluntary movements, and speech.
Process what we see.  Visual information.
Take in sensory information about temperature, touch, taste, and pain.

6) While swimming, or playing an instrument, which of the five main parts of the brain are you using? (considering you have been doing this activity for a long time).

Have fun!

Welcome to the 3rd period!

In this blog you will find recommended videos, articles or links to websites that could help you understand each of the topics seen in class, better.

You can post questions or doubts so we can all help each other, and find different ways to understand what we will be learning.
